Last week, Canada’s state-sponsored mainstream media, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, released two major pieces on what they are calling the ‘Christian fundamentalist movement’ in Canada. In both pieces, the Ezra Institute is identified as a thought-leader and key player.

Our cultural treatment of everything once sacred as common, unimportant and profane is a mark of our apostasy and disrespect for God and the places in which He is worshipped and adored. Instead, we require honor and respect for human courts, government buildings and state property, but not the Lord. We live in a context where the Canadian Prime Minister will fence off Parliament as sacred space for democracy (people power) and to protect himself from peaceful political dissent and yet will do nothing when over 50 churches are burned to the ground.

The following article was written in December 2020 and initially published at Rebel Alliance Media in January 2021. Over a year later, unlawful freedom-denying mandates continue to be enforced in Ontario and Canada, and the population is receiving daily developments on the Canadian truckers’ Freedom Convoy in Ottawa. Numerous Christians in Canada have begun examining and rehearsing many of these same issues – scores for the first time.

By any reckoning, the events of 2020 and 2021 have been at once tragic, deeply disturbing, and far-reaching in scope and implication. A kind of paradigm shift has taken place while millions of us were ordered to stay in our homes. What was once unthinkable in the West can never be made unthinkable again.

The lockdown of life has exposed a fragility and weakness in twenty-first century Christian thought. How did this come about, and what is the task of Christians in our current cultural moment?

The reality and power of the God and gospel proclaimed by Calvin and others at the Reformation shook the nations and steadily transformed Western civilization.
